The Power of Moving Meditations

Bren Leclerc | APR 22, 2025

What if stillness wasn't a requirement to get the benefits of meditation?

I've heard you say that sitting for meditation makes you want to crawl out of your skin.

Meditation means single-pointed focus, usually in a quiet, solo way.

You can access that focus by getting into a flow state while creating art, pausing to admire a tree blowing in the wind, or getting into the zone while exercising.

And while these activities can bring you some mental peace, it’s important to invite stillness into your daily life too.

“But I can’t sit still!”

Stillness is a skill you can train, if you choose, just like anything else.

For now, do what you can to access that place of mental peace, whether it’s making art, going for a run, or hugging a tree, because that’s important for your mental health.

If one day you want to be able to sit on the floor with your eyes closed and meditate in the traditional sense, but right now you last about 6 seconds before wanting to crawl out of your skin, I’ve got you.

Try moving meditations.

These techniques can help you build and sustain your concentration, and practice setting aside this quiet time.

“How do I do a moving meditation?”

Move your hands in time with your breath while sitting or standing still.

That way you have an outlet for the movement that wants to happen, but you’re also training yourself to keep the rest of your body still.

Focusing on or counting the breath occupies a chunk of your brain power. And your brain places a lot of importance on the hands, so moving your hands takes up a lot of your ‘brain space,’ making it a little easier to stay present.

You can try out seven different techniques in the 7-Day Moving Meditation Challenge.

Each day introduces a new moving meditation technique to follow along with, and you only need to spend 5 minutes a day to start this new habit.

You can trade 5 minutes of scrolling for 5 minutes of training this new skill and finish the week with a bunch of new tools you can use anytime, anywhere you want to focus.
